Senior Tom Cawood closed out his collegiate career in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Championship Tournament on Thursday in Cary, N.C.  Cawood also earned All-American honors following his first-round victory.

In the opening round, the DU senior squared off against Washington & Lee's top singles player, Hayden White.  Cawood struck first with a hard-fought victory in the first set.  After the two battled to a 6-6 tie, the senior secured the opening set with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.  White answered in the next set with a 6-3 decision.  In the third-and-decisive set, Cawood edged his opponent via 6-4 score.  With the win, the Central Region Senior Player of the Year secured his first-career All-American certificate and became the 10th athlete in program history to earn All-American status.

Cawood returned to the court later in the afternoon for his second-round match against William's Felix Sun.  Like in his first match, Cawood took the early advantage with a 6-4 decision in the first set.  However, the senior found himself in yet another three-set battle after suffering a 6-1 setback.  As he entered his sixth set of the day, the heat began to take its toll on the Big Red singles player.  Despite a valiant effort, Sun doubled up Cawood, the only athlete in the field to play back-to-back three-set matches, 6-3.

The senior ended his career with 54 career singles victories, which ranks tied for sixth all-time with classmate Matt McErlean.  Cawood also ranks ninth in career singles winning percentage (.730).
