Senior Tom Cawood's three-set victory at first singles propelled the Denison Big Red to a 5-1 win over Division I Dayton on Monday in Granville.
With Denison leading 4-1, the battle between Cawood and Aidan Koross went to a third set following a 6-4 win by the DU senior. Frustration started to set in for Koross, who won the opener 7-5, as he struggled to keep his forehand shots in play. Cawood broke the Flyer rookie twice en route to a commanding 5-0 lead in the final set. Koross showed some signs of life with a win in the sixth game, but the senior held serve to lock up the Big Red win.
DU took a 3-0 lead following doubles action. Seniors Matt McErlean and Tyler Cempre notched their 13th win of the season after doubling up Koross and Josh Malyon at No. 1 doubles. The team of Grant Veltman and Juan Guerra also posted an 8-4 decision at the third flight, while Tim Martin and Cawood knocked off Joe West and Robert Salcedo 8-5 at second doubles.
The Big Red's fourth point came at No. 3 singles as Casey Cempre won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Malyon. With the win, Cempre improved to 11-4 in singles play. Matches at fourth through sixth singles were approaching third sets when the decision was reached.
Denison improves to 10-1 on the year, while the Flyers fall to 5-11. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they host Oberlin College at 1 p.m.
