DU shuts out Capital for first win

Box Score

Senior Chris Olson's goal in the 40th minute was all Denison needed as they blanked Capital University 3-0 on Saturday evening at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.

The Crusaders appeared to draw first blood in the 10th minute when Capital goalkeeper Bob Weisgarber uncorked a free kick from roughly 80 yards out that bounced over DU goalie Matt Wagner and found its way into the Big Red goal.  However, an offside call by the far linesman nullified the impressive score.

Denison took their first lead of 2011 when Olson found the back of the net at 39:57.  First-year Mark Waterman threaded a pass through the Capital defense and found fellow freshman Corey Ricketts, who was streaking down the right sideline.  Ricketts lifted a cross over the charging Weisgarber and found Olson all alone at the left post.  The senior captain settled the ball and fired a shot into the wide open goal.  Denison took a 1-0 lead into the intermission after outshooting Capital 11-3 in the first 45 minutes.

DU wasted no time extending their lead in the second half as sophomore Bob Casarona found the back of the net in the 55th minute of play.  Sophomore Jamie Wagner sent a cross from the right side that was settled by Casarona just outside the 18-yard box.  Casarona turned towards the goal and bent his shot around a jumping Capital defender and into the lower right corner.

Denison put the final nail in the coffin when Waterman logged his first-collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore Kory Silberg with 21 seconds remaining.

The Big Red outshot the Crusaders 18-6, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.  Matt Wagner stopped both shots on net, while Weisgarber made five saves.

DU improves to 1-0-1 on the season, while Capital falls to 1-1-0.  Denison returns to the field on Tuesday (Sept. 6) when they travel to John Carroll for a 7 p.m. match.
