Box Score TIFFIN -- The Denison men's soccer team and Heidelberg University battled to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action on Wednesday night in Tiffin, Ohio.
It took the Big Red just 10 minutes to score the game's first goal. Junior Ryan Torgersen took a pass from senior Preston Wagner and fired a shot past Heidelberg keeper Ryan Smith. The goal was Torgersen's third of the season.
The Berg successfully converted their only shot on goal of the first half when Hamid Sheriff settled a pass from Christian Walter and sent a shot past Denison goalie Matt Wagner in the 37th minute. Even though DU outshot Heidelberg 8-3 in the opening 45 minutes, the two squads entered the half tied at 1-1.
Heidelberg grabbed the momentum in the second half, outshooting Denison 6-2. Despite the edge in shots, the Berg and DU remained deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of regulation. The Big Red took the only two shots over overtime, both of which came in the second 10 minutes of play. Those two off-goal attempts came from Blake Miller and Will Krentz.
In addition to a 12-9 edge in shots, Denison also outcornered Heidelberg 9-3. The Berg committed 18 fouls compared to 10 infractions by the Big Red. Wagner and Smith each made three saves in goal.
DU moves to 5-2-2, while Heidelberg moves to 2-4-3. Denison returns to the pitch on Saturday (Oct. 1) when they travel to Allegheny for a 5 p.m. match.
