Denison doubles up Kenyon

Box Score

Denison picked up their first North Coast Athletic Conference win of 2011 following a 4-2 victory over Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon in Gambier.

Entering today's match, Denison was 10-2-2 against the Lords under head coach Rob Russo.  The Big Red were also riding a six-match unbeaten streak against Kenyon (4-0-2).

Despite their recent struggles against DU, the Lords took the early lead when Alistair Flynn logged an unassisted tally in the 28th minute.  Thirteen minutes later, junior Ryan Torgersen tied the game with his second goal of the year.  Torgersen's goal was set up by a Bob Casarona corner kick.  The two squads entered the intermission deadlocked at 1-1.  Kenyon unloaded 11 shots compared to four by the Big Red.

The Lords regained the lead just two minutes and 54 seconds into the second half when Flynn scored another unassisted goal.  Senior Preston Wagner netted the equalizer at the 67:48 mark.  With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, senior captain Chris Olson scored the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute.  Six minutes later, first-year Corey Ricketts secured the win with his first-career goal.

Denison was outshot 20-8 and outcornered 4-2.  Both teams committed 11 fouls over the 90 minute match.  Big Red goalie Matt Wagner made five saves, while Jared Kunze finished with two stops.

DU improves to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC, while the Lords fall to 3-4-1 and 0-1 in the conference.  Denison returns to the pitch on Wednesday (Sept. 28) at Heidelberg.  Match time from Tiffin, Ohio is slated for 7 p.m.
