Big Red clips Muskingum

Box Score

The Denison men's soccer team rebounded from last Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference loss with a 2-1 victory over Muskingum University on Wednesday in Granville.

The Big Red pushed the intensity throughout the first frame, outshooting the Muskies 8-3 over the opening 36+ minutes of play.  After putting three shots on goal, DU finally scored the game's first goal with exactly 8 minutes left in the first period.  Sophomore defender John Krentz recorded his first-collegiate goal when he buried a header into the lower right 90 off a corner kick by Mark Waterman.

The Big Red almost doubled their lead with 1:52 left in the half, but senior Chris Olson's close range attempt sailed just over the crossbar.  Denison took a 1-0 lead into the break after dominating the shot department, 14-3.

In the 58th minute, Muskingum tied the match when they converted a corner kick of their own.  Derek Craft deflected in the game-tying score off a corner by Travis Hybiak.  In the 65th minute, DU was awarded their first penalty kick of the season when junior Ryan Torgersen drew a foul just inside the box.  Senior Ben Peek easily converted the penalty kick to put Denison back on top 2-1.  Over the final 25:47, the Big Red backline clamped down and thwarted ever Muskie attempt at an equalizer.

Olson and Jamie Wagner each attempted a game-high four shots, while Will and John Krentz each logged two attempts.  Hybiak and Daniel Meehan had two shots apiece to pace the MU attack.

Sophomore goalie Matt Wagner made one stop in 90 minutes, while Muskie keeper Hunter Huffman made four saves.  The Big Red outshot Muskingum 19-7, and attempted seven corners compared to five by MU.

Denison improves to 4-2-1, while Muskingum falls to 3-4.  DU resumes NCAC action on Saturday (Sept. 24) when they travel to Kenyon for a 3 p.m. match.
