Box Score The Denison men's soccer team netted three, second-half goals en route to knocking off the College of Wooster, 3-2, on Saturday in Granville. With the win, the Big Red improve to 7-3-2 overall and 3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Despite their complete offensive domination in the first half, DU trailed 1-0 after the first 45 minute of play. Noah Wagemann notched the game's first score in the 28th minute off assists from Josh Dailey and Zach Jergan. The Big Red held a commanding 13-3 edge in shots at the break.
In the second frame, Denison remained the aggressor as they searched for the equalizer. In the 76th minute, sophomore Bob Casarona buried a shot from six yards out off assists from Chris Olson and JJ Dix. The game-tying goal was Casarona's third of the season. Just three minutes later, Dix punched home the go-ahead score off assists from junior Ryan Torgersen and freshman Mark Waterman. Torgersen settled a through ball from Waterman and found a wide open Dix who converted his third tally of the year.
DU added a much needed insurance goal in the 86th minute when sophomore Blake Miller buried a header off a Waterman free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
The Fighting Scots trimmed the deficit to 3-2 when Dailey scored with six seconds left in regulation, but it was too little too late as the Big Red picked up the victory.
After 90 minutes, Denison outshot Wooster 33-6. The Fighting Scots committed one more foul (16-15) and logged eight saves as a team. Sophomore goalie Matt Wagner played all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Big Red, while Taylor Takacs made seven saves on the day.
Casarona paced the Denison offense with a game-high nine shots, while senior Ben Peek logged five attempts and Olson added four.
DU returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 12) when they host Oberlin at Piper Stadium. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
