Box Score Denison battled through a lengthy rain delay en route to notching a key North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wittenberg on Tuesday. The Big Red edged the Tigers 2-1 in overtime.
DU wasted no time jumping out to a one-goal lead when junior Ryan Torgersen found Corey Ricketts in the 11th minute. Torgersen played a ball deep into the box behind the Wittenberg defense. The speedy Ricketts picked up the ball and beat Tiger goalie Michael Lambeck at 10:43.
With 11:25 left in regulation, the lightening and rain came and forced a lengthy delay. Once play resumed, the two squads completed the rest of the half. After 45 minutes, DU held a 6-5 edge in shots and outcornered Wittenberg 4-0.
Denison maintained their lead until the 75th minute when Joe Poff knotted the game at 1-1. Poff settled a bouncing ball and fired a shot from 22 yards out that found its way inside the far post. Denison had three corner attempts in the final four minutes of regulation, but only one shot attempt was generated from the set pieces.
Each squad logged a shot on goal in the first 6+ minutes of the first overtime session. Preston Wagner's shot resulted in a Denison corner kick. The Big Red capitalized when Ricketts headed in the game-winning goal off a Bob Casarona corner at 96:30.
DU outshot Wittenberg 14-11, and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Wittenberg committed 15 fouls, including two yellow cards, while Denison was whistled for 11 infractions. Big Red keeper Matt Wagner made two saves, while Lambeck stopped four shots.
Denison improves to 8-5-2 overall and 4-3 in the NCAC, while the Tigers fall to 5-9-1 and 1-5 in league play. DU returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 22) when they host Ohio Wesleyan at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
