Box Score Justin Griffiths goal in the 55th minute broke a 1-1 tie and sent Oberlin to a 2-1 victory over the Denison Big Red from Piper Stadium on Wednesday night.
Denison entered the match with a 4-1-1 all-time record on the artificial turf at Piper Stadium and despite outshooting the Yeomen 20-10 through 90 minutes of soccer, Oberlin made its limited scoring opportunities count. The Yeomen's first goal came in the 23rd minute of action when Oliver Miller-Farrell scored off a well placed corner kick by Matt Capozzi.
That lead would stand until the 41st minute. That's when Denison's JJ Dix sent a strong throw-in from the near sideline into the box where it caromed off the head of Oberlin's Kiefer Forsch and into the back of the net for an own goal.
The eventual game-winner would come just 10 minutes into the second half when Miller-Farrell slipped a pass from the middle of the field to a wide-open Griffiths on the near side. He had the angle on DU goalkeeper Matt Wagner and hit the ball square into the far left corner of the goal.
Denison would notch 10 shots in the second half but only one was on-goal. That shot, by Ryan Torgersen in the 81st minute, forced Yeomen goalkeeper Brandt Rentel to go low and to his right to scoop up the shot from the junior co-captain.
Rentel finished with six saves while Wagner posted three saves for the Big Red. Denison was led in shots by Bob Casarona, Chris Olson, Dix and Jamie Wagner, who all had three shots apiece.
Oberlin was paced by Miller-Farrell who also attempted three shots.
The loss drops Denison's record to 7-4-2 overall and 3-2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Oberlin improves to 5-9-0 and 2-3-0 in the conference. The Big Red will hit the road this weekend for a Saturday (Oct. 15) match in Crawfordsville, Ind. against Wabash College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
