Box Score Junior Ryan Torgersen netted two goals and assisted on the third as the Denison Big Red shut out Allegheny College, 3-0, on Saturday in Meadville, Pa.
Denison pushed the offensive pace early as they generated four corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of play. The fourth corner attempt by Bob Casarona finally paid off as he found Torgersen, who headed in the game's first goal at 15:26. The Gators outshot the Big Red in the first half 7-4, but still trailed on the scoreboard as the two teams entered the locker room.
In the second half, DU doubled its lead when sophomore Jamie Wagner found the head of Torgersen on a free kick to the far post in the 65th minute. The goal was Torgersen's fifth of the season, and marked his second-career multi-goal match.
At 83:56, Torgersen shared the wealth when he found Casarona, who logged his second goal of the year.
The Gators held a slight 12-11 edge in shots. The Big Red attempted 13 corners compared to just three by Allegheny. DU also committed twice as many fouls as the Gators (12-6). All eight of Allegheny's shots on goal were stopped by Denison keeper Matt Wagner, while John Lichina made three saves for the Gators.
DU improves to 6-2-2 overall and 2-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Allegheny falls to 7-3 and 1-1 in the league. Denison returns to the pitch on Tuesday (Oct. 4) at Wilmington. Match time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
