Big Red drops heartbreaker in double OT

Box Score

In a game that saw 28 total fouls and 13 offsides, it was a penalty kick in the 109th minute that gave the Dickinson Red Devils the 1-0 victory over the Denison men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Granville.

Even though the Big Red held a 6-5 edge in shots in the opening period, it was Dickinson who had the more threatening opportunities to score.  With roughly 20 minutes left in the first half, Derek Kachadurian rocketed a shot from inside the box that was slightly redirected into the near post as it went through the legs of teammate Dale Rodman.  With less then 20 seconds to go in the first, Ben Gemberling-Johnson rifled a shot from the left side that caromed off the right corner of the crossbar.

One of the best scoring chances for the Big Red came at the 60 minutes into the match when junior Chris Olson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) redirected an Ish Ghodbane (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins) shot just over the crossbar.

On the ensuing possession, the Red Devils' Rodman engineered a break, but had his shot corralled by freshman goalie Matt Wagner (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic).  Rodman had another chance to score with four minutes left in regulation when he settled a cross from Gembering-Johnson.  However, Rodman's shot sailed over the bar.

After the first 90 minutes were over DU held a 14-11 edge in shots.  Unfortunately, only one of those Big Red shots was on goal.  Both teams had opportunities in the first and second overtimes.

With under two minutes remaining in the match, Dickinson's Javier Mena weaved his way through the Big Red defense and drew a foul in the box with 1:14 on the clock. Mena converted his penalty kick opportunity as the Red Devils' opened their 2010 season with a win.

Ryan Torgersen (Spring, Texas/Klein), Ghodbane and Olson each recorded three shots to pace the DU attack, while Mena and Rodman finished with six and five shots, respectively, for Dickinson.  The aggressive Red Devil offense also committed 11 offsides compared to just two by Denison.

Wagner made three saves in net for the Big Red, while Cody Hickok registered one stop for the Red Devils.

Denison (0-2) returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 5) when they host Ohio Northern University at Barclay-Thomsen Field.  Match time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
