Box Score On Wednesday in Bexley, Ohio the Denison University men's soccer team proved that nothing is over until it's over. With just one second left in the match, senior Lenny Mills (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) found the back of the net for the second time to give the Big Red a 2-1 victory over Capital University in double overtime.
The two teams engaged in a tightly contested opening 45 minutes of action. The Crusaders held a slim 8-7 edge in shots, but the squads remained scoreless heading into the break. In the 69th minute, Denison broke the scoreless draw when Mills scored his third goal of the season off an assist from junior Ben Peek (Burke, Va./Robinson Secondary).
Now trailing with 21 minutes left in the contest, the Crusaders continued to apply offensive pressure. In the 78th minute, Capital's Lewis Black headed in the equalizer off a corner kick by Aaron Pound. Black's second tally of the season forced the game into an extra session. Even though each squad notched a goal in the frame, the Crusaders held a distinct 15-5 advantage in shots in the second period.
After battling for 19 scoreless overtime minutes, Mills notched his second score of the day with just one tick left on the clock. Mills' game winner came off an assist from fellow senior Ish Ghodbane (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins).
At the final whistle the Crusaders outshot DU 32-17, including a 13-11 edge in shots on net. The Purple and White also attempted seven corner kicks compared to five by Denison.
Big Red goalie John Huddleston (Ballwin, Mo./St. Louis University) had a career outing in between the pipes. The freshman set a new school record with 12 saves on the day breaking previous mark of 11 stop set on Sept. 13, 2008 by recent Denison grad Kevin Donahue.
With the win, DU improves to 4-5 on the year, while Capital falls to 7-2 in 2010. The Big Red return to action on Saturday (Oct. 2) when they host Wabash College at Barclay-Thomsen Field. The North Coast Athletic Conference match is scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m.
