Late goal sends JCU past Big Red in '10 lid-lifter

Box Score

Joe Ciacchi scored the go-ahead goal in the 89th minute of play resulting in a 2-1 come from behind victory for the John Carroll Blue Streaks over the Denison Big Red in the 2010 season opener from Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville, Ohio.

The Blue Streaks trailed 1-0 at the half but took charge early in the second half, finally breaking through with the game-tying goal in the 64th minute when Jeff Kosek cleaned up the rebound after his penalty kick attempt was saved by first-year Denison goalkeeper Matt Wagner (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic).  Kosek went low and to the left and Wagner was on top of it, but the ball ricocheted off his hands and back into the box where Kosek followed for the easy put back.

The match would remain tied until with just over one minute left in regulation, John Carroll's Corey Rider sent a cross into Ciacchi who was stationed at the near corner of the goal.  The crossed ball was placed perfectly on Ciacchi's right foot and in one side-spinning motion he sent the first touch past Wagner for the eventual game-winner.

John Carroll outshot DU 16-2 in the second half as they turned up the heat on a Denison defense that played very well in the first half.  In that opening half the Big Red managed to outshoot JCU 8-6, placing five of those eight shots on-goal.  In the 30th minute DU got on the scoreboard first when Lenny Mills (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) sent a nice pass to Chris Olson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) who played the ball with one dribble, sending his second touch into the back of the net.  The goal was the seventh of Olson's career.

Denison was led in shots by sophomore Ryan Torgersen (Spring, Texas/Klein) who finished with four shots, all on-goal.  Wagner posted six saves in his first collegiate start while John Carroll goalkeeper, Carl Contrascier, finished with five saves in 90 minutes.

The Big Red will look to bounce back this Saturday (Sept. 4) when they host Dickinson at 3:30 p.m. at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
