Third-ranked Chicago won four of six singles as the Maroons topped the sixth-ranked Denison women's tennis team 5-2 in the championship match of the Midwest Invitational from Madison, Wis.
In singles competition, junior Kristin Cobb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) edged Jennifer Kung, who is ranked sixth in the central region, in three sets at No. 2 singles. Cobb dropped the opening set 7-5, but rebounded to take the match after winning the second and third games via 6-4, 6-2 scores. Sophomore Kate Westenberger (York, Pa./Dallastown) logged the other victory for DU with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Shanelle Trail.
The only doubles match that finished was the first flight that saw the reigning national champs Kendra Higgins and Chrissy Hu knock off Cobb and senior Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) 8-3.
Chicago improves to 14-3 overall, while the Big Red falls to 9-3 on the year. Denison returns to action on Tuesday (April 6) when they welcome Case Western Reserve to Granville, Ohio for a 4 p.m. match.
