Box Score In a rematch of last year's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match, the second-ranked Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops overcame an early deficit to knock off the Denison men's soccer team, 3-1, to capture the 2010 NCAC Tournament title on Saturday night from Roy Rike Field in Delaware, Ohio.
The Big Red wasted no time breaking the scoreless tie as they found the back of the net in the third minute of play. After a scrum in the box, senior Ish Ghodbane (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins) worked the ball back to sophomore Ryan Torgersen (Spring, Texas/Klein) at the top of the box. After Torgersen's shot from 25-yards out was blocked down by a Bishop defender, senior Lenny Mills (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) settled the ball just left of the net and ripped a shot past OWU goalkeeper Paul Hendricks.
Following a solid scoring opportunity by both teams, Ohio Wesleyan knotted the match at 1-1 when Tyler Bryant scored from close range after a shot by Dylan Stone deflected off a DU defender.
First-year Jamie Wagner (Toronto, Ontario/Upper Candada College) had a chance to put Denison back on top when he was one-on-one with Hendrick, but the rookie's shot bounced off the crossbar and was headed back to the OWU keeper by his own defender.
The Bishops took their only lead of the game in the 40th minute when Tyler Wall unleashed a shot from the top of box and buried it into the lower left corner of the net.
Ohio Wesleyan held a 13-8 advantage in shots at the break, and attempted four corners compared to just one by the Big Red.
The Battling Bishops had two chances to extend their lead on back-to-back corner attempts, but saves by Wagner and rookie Bob Casarona (South Russell, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) kept the score at 2-1. In the 69th minute, Ryan Harmanis tipped in a redirect by Travis Wall which came off a cross from the left by Matt Shadoan.
Denison attempted three shots over the final 21+ minutes, but the Big Red were unable to find the back of the net.
OWU outshot the Big Red 22-15, including an 11-5 edge in shots on net. DU rookie goalie Matt Wagner (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic) made eight saves on the night, while Hendricks finished with four stops for the Bishops. Ghodbane attempted a team-high four shots to pace the Denison attack.
The Big Red move to 10-8-1 on the season and Ohio Wesleyan improves to 16-1-2. Denison, who are hoping to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, will await word from the NCAA selection committee on Monday (Nov. 8) at 2 p.m.
