Box Score Denison scored twice in the first half and the Big Red defense was sharp throughout the 90 minutes of action. All of that resulted in an impressive 2-0 victory from the Big Red over the visiting Wilmington College Quakers from Barclay-Thomsen Field on Wednesday evening.
First-year midfielder Bob Casarona (South Russell, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) got the Big Red going in the 26th minute when he was in the right place at the right time following a shot on-goal by senior forward Lenny Mills (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). Mills sent a strong shot at Wilmington goalkeeper Antonio Trujillo who made the save but was unable to corral the shot. The ball bounced loose in front of the goal where Casarona sent it into the back of the net for his second career goal.
Just under four minutes later, Denison would score for a second time. After a free kick was awarded to the Big Red from just outside the 18-yard box, junior Preston Wagner (Toronto, Ontario/TASIS American School) sent his free kick off the wall of five Wilmington players. The ball bounced right back to Wagner who quickly settled it and sent another well struck, low line drive that found the left corner of the goal. It was Wagner's third goal of the season and his third in the last two matches.
Over the next 60 minutes the DU defense, led by senior Drew Lash (Ballwin, Mo./Whitfield School) and Evan Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), kept the Quakers contained. Wilmington attempted six shots in the second half, sending three of those shots on-goal. For the match, Denison outshot Wilmington 20-11 and out-cornered them 7-4. Denison goalkeeper Matt Wagner (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic) recorded four saves while notching his first career shutout in 90 minutes of work. Wilmington starter, Trujillo, played 45 minutes and finished with four saves. Anton Niklasson played the final 45 minutes and faced seven shots but did not have to make a save.
The win moves Denison over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 6-5. Tonight's game also concludes their non-conference schedule. Nine of the Big Red's first 11 matches were outside of the North Coast Athletic Conference. They finish the year 5-4 in those contests. The remaining six regular season matches will be against NCAC opponents. Their next match will be Saturday (Oct. 9) when they take on The College of Wooster at 3:30 p.m.
