DU evens NCAC record with OT win over Wabash

Box Score

Junior Preston Wagner (Toronto, Ontario/TASIS) notched his second goal of the day late in the first overtime period to give the Denison men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over the Little Giants of Wabash College in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon from Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.

Wabash wasted no time cashing in on their man advantage after a Denison red card in the 16th minute.  Ryan Fier headed a failed clear attempt into the net at 15:38 to give the Little Giants the early edge.  Fier's unassisted tally was his second of the season.

In the 23rd minute the Big Red attempted to knot the game when a defensive turnover by Wabash resulted in a scoring chance for DU.  Senior Zach Gaines (Cincinnati, Ohio/Finneytown) chipped a pass to classmate Lenny Mills (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), but Mills' shot sailed over the crossbar.

In the 30th minute, the game turned into a 10-on-10 affair when the Little Giants received a red card of their own just outside the 18-yard box.  The infraction set up a Wagner free kick that ricocheted off the cross bar.

In the second half Denison finally found the equalizer when Wagner settled a clearing attempt at the top of the box and ripped a shot through traffic past Wabash goalie Ian MacDougall.  Wagner's first goal of 2010 came in the 64th minute.  The Big Red gained their first lead of the match at 74:38 when junior Ben Peek (Burke, Va./Robinson Secondary) converted DU's first penalty kick attempt of the season.  The PK was awarded after a Wabash foul deep in the box.

With just under eight minutes left in regulation, the visiting tied the match when Femi Oluyedun scored from 10 yards out off a pass from Ian Kelly.  The late strike by the Wabash sent the game into an extra session.

The Big Red successfully won their second-straight overtime contest after Wagner finished off a beautifully executed corner kick.  Gaines sent a low corner through the top portion of the box that was settled by fellow senior Evan Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington).  Johnson then one-touched the ball to a wide open Wagner who uncorked another shot from the top of the 18 that found its way into the back of the net.

Denison outshot Wabash 22-14, and attempted 10 corner kicks compared to just four by the Little Giants.  In goal, first-year Matt Wagner (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic) made seven stops, while MacDougall had six saves.

Denison improves to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC, while Wabash fall to 6-5 on the year and 0-2 in the league.  The Big Red will take a break from conference play on Wednesday (Oct. 6) when they host Wilmington College at 7 p.m.
