Box Score Sophomore Ryan Torgersen (Spring, Texas/Klein) scored a pair of first-half goals as the Denison University men's soccer team kept their winning streak alive with a 2-1 victory over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Allegheny College at Barclay-Thomsen Field on Saturday afternoon.
Torgersen broke the scoreless tie at 27:08 when he volleyed a short cross from rookie Bob Casarona (South Russell, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) off his chest and buried it into the upper left corner. The score was his second of the season, while the helper was the first of Casarona's career. Roughly 10 minutes later the duo hooked up once again for the Big Red's second goal of the match. Casarona sent a perfectly-placed cross that Torgersen punched into the back of the net. The two-tally performance marked the sophomore's first career multiple-goal outing. After the first 45 minutes of action Denison held a 12-3 advantage in shots and a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.
Allegheny cut the deficit in half in the 71st minute of action when Travis Tasker chested down a crossing pass from Joe Caruso and ripped a shot past Big Red goalkeeper Matt Wagner (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic). The Gators were able to register three more shots over the final 19 minutes of action, but only one found its way to the Denison goalie.
Torgersen and senior Ish Ghodbane (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins) co-lead DU with a game-high four shots each, while Matt Weintraub notched a team-best three shots for Allegheny.
With the win, the Big Red recorded their first five-match winning streak since they opened the 2003 season with 13-consecutive victories. DU outshot Allegheny 18-11 and held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks. Wagner improved to 6-3 on the year after making three saves for Denison, while John Lichina stopped six shots for the Gators.
The Big Red improve to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC, while Allegheny falls to 7-6-3 and 3-2-1 in the league. Denison looks to continue their winning ways on Wednesday (Oct. 20) when travel to Oberlin College to take on the Yeomen at 7 p.m.
Prior to the match Denison's six senior members, Hubert Beauchemin, Zach Gaines, Ish Ghodbane, Evan Johnson, Drew Lash, and Lenny Mills were honored for their dedication to the Big Red men's soccer program.
