Ghodbane's two goals help Denison edge Case Western Reserve

Junior midfielder Ish Ghodbane (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins) netted a pair of goal, including the game winner, in Denison University's 3-2 victory over Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.

Case Western drew first blood in the 28th minute when Renee Silva settled a bouncing ball in the box and fired a shot past Big Red goalie Kevin Donahue (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) from five yards out.  DU evened the score in the 40th minute when Ghodbane sent a free kick from just outside the box into the back of the net.

The Spartans regained the lead at the 62:02 mark when Silva sent a cross to a streaking Mikey Schmid who buried the pass into a wide open net.  Denison responded just 25 second later when senior midfielder Peter Shorten (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) served a ball from left to right to junior Lenny Mills (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) who headed it straight into the goal.

In the 68th minute, the Big Red took their only lead of the day when senior defender Brian Combias (Madison, N.J./The Pingry School) sent a cross towards the net from about 30 yards out that was headed by Ghodbane past Case keeper Ben Yabrow.

Denison outshot the Spartans 15-14, which included a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.  Donahue finished the night with two saves, while Yabrow made four stops.

With the win, DU improves to 2-0 on the season, while the loss drops Case Western to 0-2.  The Big Red return to action on Sunday when they host Washington University (Mo.) at 5:30 p.m.
