Senior goalkeeper Kevin Donahue (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) posted his 21st career shutout and three different members of the Big Red scored a goal as DU rolled past Wilmington College 3-0 on Saturday night.
Denison broke the scoreless tie in the 35th minute when Nate Stifler (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) found Ben Peek (Burke, Va./Robinson Secondary) who's shot deflected off Quaker goalkeeper Marty Ellis and into the goal. It marked the first goal of the season for Peek and the first career assist for Stifler.
The score would remain 1-0 in favor of DU until late in the match when Preston Wagner (Toronto, Ontario/TASIS) and Chris Olson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) gave Denison a little insurance with goals in the 74th and 88th minute, respectively.
Wagner's goal was assisted by senior Peter Shorten (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) and Zach Gaines (Cincinnati, Ohio/Finneytown) was awarded the helper on Olson's goal.
Denison outshot Wilmington 17-13 and out-cornered the Quakers 8-2. Donahue posted five saves with three of those coming in the second half. The shutout was the third of the season and he is just two shutouts shy of tying Steve Horan for the Denison career record which has stood for 25 years.
The victory improves the Big Red's record to 4-2-1 while Wilmington falls to 3-4. Denison will host John Carroll University on Wednesday (Sept. 23) at 4 p.m.
