Capital University overcame a 1-0 deficit thanks to a pair of goals by Daniel McCarthy, resulting in a 2-1 win for the Crusaders over the Denison Big Red on Wednesday night from Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.
DU jumped out to an early lead when Big Red midfielder Chris Olson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) got off a shot which deflected off of a Capital defender and into the goal. It marked the first score of the season for Olson and 14 minutes into the contest Denison was off to an excellent start.
That strong play would continue as time elapsed in the first half. After their fourth corner kick of the period, Denison's Preston Wagner (Toronto, Ontario/TSAIS American School) took a shot at the Capital goal that sailed wide and to the left. Minutes later, in the 33rd minute, Capital's McCarthy would tie the game at 1-1 when he sent a shot from the top of the box to the lower left hand corner, past a diving Kevin Donahue (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich).
At the half Denison held a 5-3 advantage in shots and had taken five corner kicks to Capital's zero. Thirteen minutes into the second half the Crusaders struck first when McCarthy beat a DU defender one-on-one and sent a shot into the left upper 90 for his second goal of the game and his third of the season.
Following the go-ahead goal by McCarthy, Denison midfielders Peter Shorten (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) and Ish Ghodbane (Ladue Horton Watkins) would both take shots that would be saved by Crusader keeper Justin Bultman.
In the end, Denison and Capital would both attempt 11 shots. Bultman posted four saves while Donahue stopped three would-be goals. Corner kicks were 7-0 in favor of the Big Red.
The loss sends Denison's record to 3-2-1 while Capital improves to 4-3. Denison will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 19) when they travel to Wilmington College for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against the Quakers.
