The Big Red men's soccer team improved to 6-3-1 and remained unbeaten in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 3-0 win over Allegheny College on Sunday afternoon in Meadville, Pa. The shutout was their fourth of the season and it also marked the fifth time this season DU has scored at least three goals in a match.
Last weekend at Wabash the Big Red exploded for six goals in the second half, with five of those coming in a 10 minute span. In a similar occurrence this week, it took a little time for the Denison offense to get humming but when they broke through in the 52nd minute it was signs of things to come. Just over six minutes into the second half, Denison's Ish Ghodbane (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins) took a shot that went off the cross bar. Freshman Ryan Torgersen (Spring, Texas/Klein) was there to handle the carom and sent the rebound past Gator keeper Andrew Shirley for the match's first goal.
Over the next seven minutes neither team managed a shot until Ghodbane found senior Tucker Mauke (Simsbury, Conn./West Simsbury), giving Denison a 2-0 lead. The match's final goal would come in the 70th minute when Peter Shorten (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) converted their first penalty kick attempt of the season. Leading up to that PK, Denison had taken four shots and two corner kicks in an eight minute span.
Denison finished the match with 16 shots and six corner kicks compared to 10 shots and four corners for the Gators. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Donahue (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) posted three saves and earned his 22nd career shutout. He needs just one more shutout to tie the Denison career record.
Shirley posted three saves for Allegheny. Denison's shot leaders were Chris Olson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) and Ghodbane with four apiece.
Denison will return to action when they host Ohio Wesleyan University next Saturday at 3 p.m.
