Big Red doubles up Wittenberg

The Denison men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to secure a key road victory over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wittenberg University on Saturday night.  The Big Red knocked off the Tigers 4-2 in Springfield, Ohio.

DU jumped out to an early lead when sophomore Chris Olson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) rifled a shot at the top of the 18 past Wittenberg goalie Michael Lambeck at the 6:16 mark.  Olson then showed his generosity in the 13th minute when he played a pass back to a trailing Preston Wagner (Toronto, Ontario/TASIS American School) who scored at the top of the 18 to give Denison a 2-0 lead not even 15 minutes into the match.

The Tigers cut the deficit in half in the 30th minute when Tom Fisher scored off a free kick by Michael Condon.  Wittenberg tied the game at the 57:45 mark when Stefan Latham scored off an assist by Tom Fisher.

The Big Red regained their lead in the 76th minute when Olson sent a cross from the left side that was buried into the back of the net by senior Peter Shorten (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy).  Olson tacked on an insurance goal in the 86th minute to seal the Denison win.

DU outshot the Tigers 15-10, and held a 10-7 advantage in shots on net.  Denison attempted 10 corners compared to Wittenberg's six.  Denison goalie Kevin Donahue (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) made five saves while Lambeck stopped six shots.

With the win, DU improves to 9-4-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in league play while the Tigers fall to 3-11-2 and 2-4-1.  Additionally, the victory coupled with a Kenyon loss moves the Big Red into sole possession of second place in the NCAC.

Denison returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 28) when they host Hiram College under the lights at Barclay-Thomsen Field at 7 p.m.
