Last year in Granville, Earlham's Bannet Asingura scored two goals, including the game-winner with just over one minute remaining to lead his team to a 2-1 win over the Big Red.
On Tuesday, Denison got some revenge and held the explosive Asingura scoreless en route to a 2-0 win over the Quakers in Richmond, Ind. The win improved DU's record to 7-4-1 and also improved their record in the North Coast Athletic Conference to 3-1.
In the process, senior goalkeeper Kevin Donahue (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) moved into a tie for first place in the Denison record books with his 23rd career shutout. Donahue posted one save on the day but lowered his season goals against average to 1.05. This season he has played all 1,119 minutes in goal and he has notched five of those 23 shutouts through the first 12 matches of the 2009 season. With his next shutout he will move past 1984 graduate Steve Horan and into first place all alone.
It didn't take the Big Red long to take the early lead against the Quakers. Senior Tucker Mauke (Simsbury, Conn./West Simsbury) found classmate Peter Shorten (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) with the eventual game-winner in the 11th minute. The next 67 minutes would be played without a goal but Mauke would give head coach Rob Russo's team a little breathing room with his third goal of the season in the 78th minute of play.
Denison took 10 shots on the day while Earlham posted seven total shots. The Big Red also attempted five corner kicks to four for Earlham. The Big Red will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 17) when they host Oberlin at 7 p.m.
