Box Score Washington, Pa.- In its seventh shutout of the season, the Denison field hockey team defeated the Presidents of Washington and Jefferson College 5-0 on the road. Today's victory marks the second time this year the Big Red have beaten a team 5-0. With today's win, they improve to 9-6 overall and 7-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. The Presidents drop to 5-9 for the season and 3-5 in conference play.
Scoring the game-winning goal was junior Emma Gebhart, who secured a mishandled clear attempt and swept the ball right into the back of W&J's cage to put the Big Red up 1-0 with just ten seconds left in the first quarter.
Late in the second quarter, with just under four minutes left in the half, Lila Smith weaved through the President's defense and crossed a ball in front of W&J's cage, where teammate Lulu Keil deflected it in for Denison's second goal of the day. In the second half, Keil couldn't be stopped offensively, scoring her second goal of the day off a pass from fellow goal scorer Gebhart, and then drawing attention and passing the ball to Madden Phelps for goal number four as time hit zero.
Up 4-0 heading into the final quarter, the Big Red kept the offensive pressure, forcing four corners in the first 12 minutes. On the fourth corner attempt, Denison moved the ball crisply around the circle, resulting in Rachel Gilio finding Reilly Desmond for goal number five.
Denison finished the day with four assists, 18 shots, and 18 penalty corners, while giving up just one shot and no penalty corners on its defensive end. Keil finished the day with two goals and one assist. Therese Lucian tallied one save, while W&J's Grace Edhard finished the day with seven saves.
