NCAA Tournament Preview: Field Hockey

Big Red get ready to play

Granville, Ohio - The Denison Big Red field hockey team has punched its ticket to the Division III NCAA Field Hockey Tournament after an emphatic 2-1 overtime win against Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday. The championship win marked their sixth Conference tournament title in program history, and it will be their first time heading back to the NCAA Tournament since the 2023 season. Denison will face off against 5th-ranked Salisbury University at Salisbury on Wednesday, November 12, at 4 p.m.

NCAA Tournament History

This is the seventh time Denison has been in the NCAA Tournament this century, and 16th in total. In their six appearances since 2000, the Big Red have a record of 2-6, with First Round wins coming in 2019 against Rochester and in 2000 against Eastern. In their last appearance in 2023, the Big Red dropped a tough 3-0 loss to 9th-ranked York College in the First Round of the Tournament. 

Matchup History

Denison and Salisbury have faced off 11 times before this upcoming matchup, and the Sea Gulls have won all 11 matchups. The last meeting between both squads was in 2008, where the Sea Gulls bested the Big Red 7-0. 

Get to Know the Sea Gulls

Salisbury finished their season with a 17-2 record and a 5-0 conference record. They earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after defeating Cortland 7-1 in the SUNYAC Tournament Championship. The Sea Gulls are making their 31st-consecutive and 40th overall appearance in the tournament, and have captured five national championships. Last season, they advanced all the way to the NCAA Tournament Final Four, but lost to eventual champion Middlebury 2-1.

NCAA Bracket Information

The tournament consists of 28 teams, with the top four seeds earning a bye. There were 18 automatic qualifiers and 10 at-large bids. The Second and Third Rounds will be on November 15-16, and the semifinals will be held on November 21 at 12 and 3:30 p.m. at Sheppard Field in Hartford, Connecticut. The National Championship game will be held on November 23 at 121 p.m. at Sheppard Field to crown a champion.
