GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 17, 2024) – Senior
Jacob Brown and junior
Andrew D'Asaro of the Denison University men's track & field team will be competing at the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships next week in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. For each individual event contested, including the decathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition.
Brown will compete in the decathlon and is ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division III after scoring 6,504 points and winning his third-straight North Coast Athletic Conference decathlon title earlier this month. In all, Brown has broken the Denison school record in the decathlon four times, doing so previously at the NCAC Combined Events Championships (6,092 points) in 2022 and the North Central College Combined Events Qualifier in both 2022 (6,211 points) and 2023 (6,356 points). Brown is a five-time NCAC Combined Events Champion with wins in the heptathlon in 2023 and 2024 and wins in the decathlon in 2022, 2023 and 2024. After winning the decathlon for the third year in a row and adding two more all-conference finishes with third-place marks in both the pole vault and the javelin, Brown was named the NCAC Field Athlete of the Year at this month's NCAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
After qualifying for nationals in the heptathlon at this year's NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships, Brown finished 18th out of 19 with 4,244 points. Between the seven events, Brown finished with five top-15 performances, including top-10 performances in the shot put (3rd place) and the high jump (8th place).
D'Asaro will compete in the javelin and is ranked third in the country with a school record throw of 64.7 meters (210' 2") set at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic in early April. D'Asaro also set the school record in the javelin three times last season as his throw of 58.88 meters (193' 2") in the dual meet against the Fighting Scots broke the previous Denison school record of 57.85 meters set by Steve Gallego in 2009.
In 2023, D'Asaro entered the national championships seeded 15th in the javelin with a school record of 61.59 meters (202' 1") set at the NCAC Outdoor Championships. He would go on to finish 11th out of 22 competitors in the javelin at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championship. His best throw at nationals last year came on his third and final attempt of the preliminaries as he finished with a mark of 59.78 meters (196' 01"). His first attempt landed at 58.25 meters (191' 01") while his second went 53.07 meters (174' 01").
The championships run from Thursday, May 23, to Saturday, May 25, at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The decathlon competition will take place beginning at 12 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday while the men's javelin is slated for 3 p.m. on Thursday.
