No. 13 men’s tennis improves to 10-3

Mackler breaks career singles wins record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 7, 2024) – The No. 13 Denison University men's tennis team took on the unique challenge of both playing on the road and playing at home on the same day as the Big Red won 9-0 at Ohio Wesleyan University in a match starting at noon before returning to Granville for a 5 p.m. nonconference match against Shawnee State University (Ohio) and again winning 9-0.

Andy Mackler 2024With two singles wins on Sunday, senior Andy Mackler is now Denison's career record holder in singles wins with 68, surpassing the previous record of 67 wins set by Tim Cianciola (2019-22).
 
Notable Results:
Match #1 – No. 13 Denison 9, Ohio Wesleyan 0:
Doubles
  • Kael Shah and Ethan Green took down Mark Siriwanichkul and Kobe Francis 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and Colin Gramley and Archie Turner defeated Marcelo Aguilar and Elliot Spicer 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
  • Milan Gonela and Mackler paired up for the first time this season in a dual match and won 8-3 against Rainer Holl and Gabe Fogle at No. 3 doubles.
Singles
  • Zachary Portnoy and Gonela both won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. It was the first conference match this season for both players.
  • Kyle Patrick defeated Spicer 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and Ryan Patrick won 6-1, 6-1 over Aguilar at No. 2 singles. It was the first-career singles action in a dual match for K. Patrick.
  • Green won 6-3, 6-0, against Sirwanichkul at No. 1 singles.
  • Lastly, at No. 3 singles, Mackler defeated Francis 6-1, 6-0 to tie Cianciola's career record of 67 singles wins.
 
Match #2 – No. 13 Denison 9, Shawnee State 0:
Doubles
  • Portnoy and Shah (No. 2 doubles) and Jacob Patterson and Mackler (No. 3 doubles) both won 8-0.
  • Patterson and Mackler are now 12-0 when playing together this season.
  • Green and Gramley defeated Keenen Lambert and Zayden Rinehart 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Singles
  • Patterson won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles; Shah won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles; R. Patrick won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles; and Gonela won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
  • Shah is now 6-0 at No. 1 singles this season.
  • Gonela, a senior from Columbus, Ohio, finished 3-0 this weekend in singles.
  • Mackler defeated Ivan Wularu 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to improve to 21-2 on the season and 68-16 in his career in singles and officially break Cianciola's career record of 67 singles wins.
  • The final match of the day was a 6-3, 6-3 win for Nickawn Namdar over Rinehart at No. 5 singles.
 
Team Records:
  • Denison improves to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while OWU falls to 6-5 and 0-2 and Shawnee State drops to 6-11.
  • The match against Shawnee State was Denison's first home match of the season and was its first-ever matchup against the Bears.
 
Record Book Watch:
Career Doubles Wins:
  • Mackler, who has already set Denison's career record for combined wins and singles wins this weekend, now has 74 career doubles wins. The record is 75 set by Kevin Newman (2005-08).
