No. 4 Big Red Fall to No. 5 Spartans in NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals 4-3

Chattanooga, Tenn. - In a tightly contested rematch of last year's national championship, it was the Spartans who were able to get revenge and win to move on to the national semifinals tomorrow. The Big Red won the doubles point, and fought relentlessly in singles but ultimately fell short in a gritty grudge match. Denison finishes their season 27-3, their third time in four seasons winning more than 26 games.

Doubles: The Big Red went down in the first match in a 6-2 decision, but Andreas Chapides and Nick Meyers were able to even it up at one with a 6-4 victory after being down 3-2. It was then up to Jacob Patterson and Wesley Huang to take the first point of the match, and the duo was surgical, winning their match in the No. 2 flight 6-4 to take the first point of the match, 1-0. The pair went 15-of-16 (94%) on their first serve points.The two teams played each other twice before their third match today, and all three times the Big Red took the doubles point.

Singles: The Spartans tied up the match quickly with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Chapides in the No. 4 flight. Anthony Payiavlas took back the lead, cruising to a 6-2, 6-3 victory to go up 2-1. Meyers fought hard in the No. 5 spot, tying the second set 5-5 before falling to a score of 6-4, 7-5 to tie the match back up. Shah would then give Denison back the lead once more, digging out an impressive 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 victory, but then Green would fall 6-4 7-6 (7-3) to knot the match up 3-3. 

It was then up to Patterson once again to try and clinch the win for the Big Red. After losing the first set 6-0, Patterson fought all the way back and found himself down 6-5 in the second set. He would clinch to tie 6-6, and won the tiebreaker 7-2 to head into the third set in winner take all. The set would go back and forth, with Patterson tying up the set 5-5, but fell 7-5, ending Denison's season and run in the NCAA Tournament.

Shah and Green will continue their season in the singles and doubles bracket championship, with matches beginning on May 23 with times to be determined.
