Men’s tennis defeats Wittenberg as Mackler becomes winningest player in program history

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (April 6, 2024) – The No. 13 Denison University men's tennis team kicked off the final month of the regular season with a 9-0 road win at Wittenberg University to improve to 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. With his wins in both singles and doubles, Andy Mackler becomes Denison's all-time winningest player with 138 career combined wins between both singles and doubles. The previous record was 137 combined wins from Tim Cianciola (2019-22).
 
Notable Results:
Doubles Singles
  • Both Gramley (No. 4 singles) and Nickawn Namdar (No. 5 singles) won 6-0, 6-0.
  • Mackler's program record-breaking win came with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Kyle Fout at No. 3 singles.
  • Denison finished out the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win from Shah at No. 1 singles; a 6-0, 6-2 win by senior Nadeem Jones in his first dual match action of the season at No. 6 singles; and a 6-0, 6-2 win by Ryan Patrick at No. 2 singles.
 
Team Records:
  • No. 13 Denison improved 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC while also winning its 23rd straight match against Wittenberg (1-12 overall, 0-1 NCAC) since defeating the Tigers in the NCAC Tournament Championship match back in 2004.
 
Record Book Watch:
Career Singles Wins:
  • In addition to his career combined wins record, Mackler now sits at 66 career singles wins, just one of the record of 67 wins set by Cianciola.
Career Doubles Wins:
  • Mackler now has 72 career doubles wins. The record is 75 set by Kevin Newman (2005-08).
 
Next Up: Tomorrow (Apr. 7) will be an interesting day for the Big Red as they play at Ohio Wesleyan University in NCAC action (12 p.m.) while also hosting Shawnee State University (Ohio) in nonconference action (5 p.m.).
