OBERLIN, Ohio (April 28, 2024) – For the third year in a row, Denison University's
Jacob Brown is the North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Combined Events Champion after placing first overall in the decathlon at Oberlin College on Saturday and Sunday. J. Brown finished with a Denison school record 6,504 points and was 333 points ahead of DePauw University's Daniel Jansen (6,171 points) in second place.
J. Brown was in second place with 3,419 points after the first five events on Saturday, trailing Jansen with 3,450 points. J. Brown was third in the 100 meter dash (11.46 seconds), won the long jump (6.62 meters) and the shot put (12.54 meters), was third in the high jump (1.79 meters) and was fourth in the 400 meter dash (53.15 seconds).
Then on Sunday, J. Brown was second with a time of 15.67 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles while Jansen was first at 15.11 seconds. But in the discus, J. Brown was first at 32.01 meters while Jansen was fourth at 28.38 meters.
J. Brown was again first with a mark of 4.00 meters in the pole vault while Jansen was third at 3.90 meters, and then he made it three wins in a row with a mark of 47.10 meters in the javelin while Jansen was fourth at 41.59 meters.
In the final event, J. Brown won the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:45.15 while Jansen was seventh at 5:30.50.
In addition to his four wins on Sunday, J. Brown finished the championship with six total wins across 10 events and added three other top-three finishes. He was top-four in every event and set new personal records for outdoor track & field in the 100 meter dash, the long jump and the shot put.
In all, J. Brown has broken the Denison school record in the decathlon four times, doing so previously at the NCAC Combined Events Championships (6,092 points) in 2022 and the North Central College Combined Events Qualifier in both 2022 (6,211 points) and 2023 (6,356 points).
J. Brown is a five-time NCAC Combined Events Champion with wins in the heptathlon in 2023 and 2024 and wins in the decathlon in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Justin Tharayil was sixth after Saturday with 2,703 points and finished in sixth place out of eight with a total of 4,858 points on Sunday. During day one, he was ninth in the 100 meter dash (12.40 seconds), sixth in the long jump (5.95 meters), third in the shot put (10.52 meters), only one spot behind Brown in fourth place in the high jump (1.76 meters), and was seventh in the 400 meter dash (59.13 seconds). Then on Sunday, he was seventh in the 110 meter hurdles (18.82 seconds), third in the discus (29.52 meters), eighth in the pole vault (3.10 meters), sixth in the javelin (39.26 meters) and fifth in the 1,500 meter run (5:21.96).
On the women's side,
Sydney Brown finished eighth out of 10 in the heptathlon with a score of 2,954 points. She was fifth with 2,208 points after the first four events on Saturday as she was third in the 100 meter hurdles (15.86 seconds), tied for sixth in the high jump (1.34 meters), sixth in the shot put (8.00 meters) and fifth in the 200 meter dash (28.03 seconds). Then on Sunday, S. Brown took third in the long jump (4.81 meters) but did not score in the javelin and then was 10th in the 800 meter run (3:15.02).
