Men’s track & field hosts Big Red Invite

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 26, 2024) – The Denison University men's track and field team won five event titles at Friday's Big Red Invitational. It was also Senior Day for the Big Red.

Tyler Miller won the long jump with a new personal record leap of 6.70 meters (21-11.75) and was third in the high jump at 1.85 meters (6-00.75).

Collin Hill was second in the shot put with a mark of 15.25 meters (50-00.50) while Justin King was third with a personal record of 14.07 meters (46-02.00).

Chris Slater was third in the discus with a long toss of 42.29 meters (138-09).

On the track, Jaylin Epps won the 200 meter dash with a personal record time of 21.90 seconds while Worth Hinshaw won the 3,000 meter run with a personal record as well at 9:02.86.

Oliver DiCerbo was second with a time of 4:04.04 in the 1,500 meter run, Will Cunningham was second with a personal record time 1:57.19 in the 800 meter run, and Malik Holley was second at 22.11 seconds in the 200 meter dash.

Denison won both the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay. In the 4x100, it was Ari Skolnik, Epps, Jairus Branch and Holley running a time of 42.42 seconds while in the 4x400 meter relay, it was Holley, Liam Quinlan, Cunningham and Jack Meyerowitz running 3:24.25.

SENIOR DAY (Times/Marks entering Friday):
  • Jairus Branch is from Wilmington, Delaware. Branch is a sprinter who specializes in the 60 meter, 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. Jar-e-us helped Denison finish in fourth place in the 4x100 meter relay at the 2022 NCAC Outdoor Championship and take third place in the 4x200 meter relay with a school record time of 1:31.00 at the 2022 NCAC Indoor Championship. That time now ranks second in program history. Branch finished eighth in the 200 meter dash with a personal record time of 22.96 seconds and helped the Big Red finish third in the 4x100 meter relay at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championship earlier this month. Earlier this year, he ran a personal record of 7.31 seconds to finish 13th in the 60 meter dash at the Muskie Meet. Branch is a student worker in the athletic training room and a member of the first-year mentorship program at Denison.
  • Jacob Brown is from Dover, Massachusetts. Brown is a five-time All-Region selection and a six-time All-NCAC performer. He is also a four-time NCAC Champion, including twice in the heptathlon and twice in the decathlon, and he finished in 18th place in the heptathlon at the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championship earlier this year. Brown is Denison's school record holder in the heptathlon with 4,895 points set at this year's NCAC Indoor Championship, and is also the record holder in the decathlon with 6,356 points set at the North Central College Combined Events Championship last season. As a freshman in 2021, Brown landed in third place a toss of 45.14 meters in the javelin at the NCAC outdoor conference championship. Brown is a student worker for the office admissions, is the development director for Camp Kesem, and is a data analyst for the strength and conditioning department.
  • Will Cunningham is from Seattle, Washington. In cross country this season, Cunningham finished 34th at the NCAC Championship with a time of 27:18.0 before running a career-best 8k with a time of 25:43.3 to finish 106th at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championship. On the track, Cunningham has been a part of distance medley relay teams that finished third at both the All-Ohio Indoor Championship and the NCAC Indoor Championship in 2022. Last time out at the Duane Gomez Invitational, Cunningham won the 800 meter run and set a personal record with a time of 1:58.22. He also set a personal record with a 26th-place time of 4:31.50 in the mile at the Wittenberg Invitational earlier this season. Cunningham is a three-time member of the NCAC Academic Honor Roll and is a three-time Denison Top-50 Scholar-Athlete. On campus, Cunningham is an Economics tutor for the Academic Resource Center.
  • Collin Hill is from Thornville, Ohio. Last season, Hill won the shot put at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championship with a toss of 15.07 meters and finished third in the event with a throw of 15.10 meters at the NCAC Outdoor Championship. He was also third in the shot put at this year's All-Ohio Outdoor Championship at 14.69 meters. Hill ranks fourth in program history in the shot put for outdoor track & field with a throw of 15.30 meters set at the Marv Frye Invitational earlier this season. In addition, at the Kenyon Tune Up this year, Hill had a toss of 14.89 meters in the shot put that ranks sixth all-time in program history for indoor track & field. He is also a member of the Big Red Football Team.
  • Worth Hinshaw is from Charlotte, North Carolina. In cross country this season, Hinshaw finished eighth at the NCAC Championship with a time of 26:19.2 before running a career-best 8k time of 25.29.3 to finish 93rd at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championship. On the track, Hinshaw won the 3,000 meter run with a personal record time of 8:49.84 at this year's All-Ohio Indoor Championship and finished fourth in the 5,000 meter run with a personal record time of 15:26.65 at the NCAC Indoor Championship. He has also been a part of distance medley relay teams that finished third at both the All-Ohio Indoor Championship and the NCAC Indoor Championship in 2022.
  • Isaiah Kessler is from Baltimore, Maryland. Kessler earned three All-NCAC honors in 2023 after finishing third in the pole vault at both conference championship meets and adding a second-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles at the outdoor championships. His runner-up time of 56.75 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles at last year's outdoor conference championship is his personal record. In indoor track & field, Kessler is sixth in program history in the pole vault with a mark of 4.40 meters set at the Muskie Meet earlier this season.
  • Thomas Zallocco-Smith is from New Albany, Ohio. In cross country this season, Zallocco-Smith finished 64th at the NCAC Championship with a time of 28:40.4 while in the previous meet at the Rowan Interregional Border Battle, he finished 24th and set a personal record in the 8k with a time of 27:10.6. On the track, Zallocco-Smith is a long distance runner who specializes in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races. At the 2023 Big Red Invitational, he set a personal record in the 3,000 meter run with a fifth-place time of 9:25.82, and at the 2023 NCAC Indoor Championship, Zallocco-Smith finished 18th and ran a personal best time in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:08.18.
 
NEXT UP: The Big Red will return to action this weekend (Apr. 27-28) when Jacob Brown and Justin Tharayil represent the men's track & field program at the 2024 North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Outdoor Championships, hosted by Oberlin College.
