No. 5 Big Red beat Little Giants to improve to 6-0 in conference play

Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 20, 2024) – No. 5 Denison University men's tennis defeated Wabash College 8-1 at home on Saturday to improve to 14-4 overall and 6-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
 
Notable Results:
Doubles
  • Andy Mackler and Zachary Portnoy won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while Ethan Green and Kael Shah (No. 1 doubles) and Milan Gonela and Tomer Ozmo (No. 3 doubles) both won by a score of 8-2.
  • Green and Shah, the No. 8-ranked pair in the Central Region, are 7-4 this season at No. 1 doubles.
  • It was the first time playing together this season for Gonela and Ozmo.
Singles
  • Colin Gramley won first with a 6-0, 6-2 decision at the No. 5 spot before Green won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
  • Nickawn Namdar won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and Shah won 6-4, 6-1 at the top spot. Namdar is 7-0 this season in dual matches while Shah is 8-1 at No. 1 singles.
  • Anthony Payiavlas fell in a third-set super tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3), at No. 4 singles.
  • Lastly, Ryan Patrick pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.
 
Record Book Watch:
Single-Season Singles Wins:
  • Shah (25-4) is now tied for third in singles wins in one season. The record is 31 set by Andreas Chapides in 2023.
Singles-Season Doubles Wins:
  • With his 26th doubles win of the season, Mackler (26-2) is now tied for second place in doubles wins in one season. The record is 28 doubles wins set by Tim Ciancola in 2022.
Single-Season Combined Wins:
  • Mackler (49-5) is still second in combined wins in one season. The record is 55 set by Cianciola in 2022.
 
Next Up: The final day of the regular season on Sunday, April 21, will see the Big Red will wrap up North Coast Athletic Conference action against No. 47 DePauw University (12 p.m.) before also hosting Otterbein University (3 p.m.) in nonconference action. DePauw is currently 12-7 overall and 5-1 in the NCAC after falling 8-1 at Kenyon College on Saturday.
