Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. (April 12, 2024) – Just two days after defeating No. 30 Kenyon College by a score of 7-2 on the road, the No. 14 Denison University men's tennis team earned another 7-2 win on the road over a fellow nationally-ranked team, but this time it came in a huge upset against No. 8 nationally-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Friday at the Tao Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Notable Results:
Doubles
- It was a great start for the Big Red as Jacob Patterson and Andy Mackler defeated Pato Garcia Muriel and Jared Phillips 8-1 at No. 3 doubles while Ethan Green and Kael Shah, ranked No. 8 by the ITA in the Central Region, won 8-6 over Colin Fox and Gaurav Singh, the No. 5-ranked doubles pair in the Central Region, at No. 1 doubles.
- Zachary Portnoy and Colin Gramley fell 8-5 to Eric Kuo and Scott Yamamoto and No. 2 doubles, making it a 2-1 Big Red lead heading into singles.
Singles
- Shah, the No. 7-ranked player in the Central Region, earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Colin Scruggs at No. 2 singles to make it a 3-1 Denison lead before Ryan Patrick fell 6-4, 6-4 to Singh at No. 4 singles.
- At No. 1 singles, No. 6-ranked Green pulled out a three-set victory, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, over Phillips, the second-ranked singles player in the region.
- Portnoy also won in three sets at No. 6 singles, taking a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 decision over Case Fagan.
- At No. 5 singles, Mackler earned a tiebreak win in his first set en route to defeating John Fakouri 7-6 (10-8), 6-2.
- The final match at No. 3 singles was the third three-setter of the match as Patterson, the fifth-ranked player in the Central Region, came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Kuo, the 18th-ranked player in the region.
Team Records:
- It was the first matchup between Denison (12-3 overall) and WashU (10-8) since a 5-2 win for the Bears in the Sweet Sixteen in 2022. During the regular season that year, it was the Big Red who were victorious by a final score of 5-4.
- With the win, Denison extends its season-long winning streak to seven straight matches, improves to 9-2 on the road so far this season, and is now 6-2 against nationally-ranked teams in NCAA Division III.
- WashU, meanwhile, is now 4-6 against fellow nationally-ranked teams.

Career Doubles Wins:
- Mackler, who already set Denison's career records for combined wins and singles wins last weekend, now has 76 career doubles wins, breaking the record of 75 wins set by Kevin Newman (2005-08).
Single-Season Records:
- Mackler (23-2) and Shah (23-3) remain tied for fifth in singles wins in one season. The record is 31 set by Andreas Chapides in 2023.
- Mackler (46-4) is second in combined wins in one season, surpassing the 45 wins earned by Chapides last season. The record is 55 set by Tim Cianciola in 2022.
