Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 31, 2024) – The No. 12 Denison University men's tennis team earned its fourth win of the season over a fellow nationally-ranked team and third such win on the road after taking down No. 37 Carnegie Mellon University by a score of 8-1 on Easter Sunday.
Notable Results:
Doubles
- Kael Shah and Ethan Green won 8-4 over the No. 11 nationally-ranked duo of Raghav Jangbahadur and Daniel Kong and No. 1 doubles.
- Denison's only loss on the day was an 8-5 defeat for Zachary Portnoy and Colin Gramley against Akshay Joshi and Derek Wong at No. 2 doubles.
- Andy Mackler and Jacob Patterson pulled out an 8-7 (7-4) tiebreak win over Theodore Gershon and Nicholas Wernink at No. 3 doubles to give the Big Red a 2-1 lead.
Singles
- Green won 6-2, 6-1 over Nadim Motaghedi at No. 1 singles.
- Patterson won 6-4, 6-4 over No. 5 nationally-ranked Jangbahadur at No. 2 singles, making it a 4-1 Big Red lead.
- The clinching win was a 6-3, 6-4 win by Portnoy against Jonathan Gu at No. 5 singles.
- Mackler pulled out a tiebreak win in the second set to win 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) over Wernink at No. 4 singles.
- After dropping their first sets, Gramley (No. 6 singles) came back to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and Shah (No. 3 singles) came back to win 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Shah's match was the end of a six-match winning streak in singles for the No. 20-ranked Daniel Kong.
Records:
- No. 12 Denison improved to 7-3 overall, 5-2 on the road and 4-2 against fellow nationally-ranked teams so far this season while No. 27 Carnegie Mellon fell to 4-7 overall, 2-4 at home and 2-4 against ranked teams.
Next Up: Denison will both play at Wittenberg University (12 p.m.) while also hosting Shawnee State University (5 p.m.) next Saturday (Apr. 6).
