GAMBIER, Ohio (February 23, 2024) – After day one of the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship, the Denison University Big Red sit in first place with 37 team points, three points in front of Wittenberg University (34 points) in second place and five points ahead of Wabash College (32 points) in third.
After beginning the meet in first place thanks to
Jacob Brown's second-straight conference championship in the heptathlon during the NCAC Combined Events Championships held at Kenyon last weekend, Brown helped get the scoring started for Denison on Friday with a six-place finish of 6.47 meters in the long jump while
Jack Blais (6.40 meters) was not far behind in seventh place.
Brown would later add a personal record time of 8.77 seconds to finish fifth in the 60 meter hurdle prelims.
Denison scored 12 points in the shot put as
Chris Slater (15.25 meters) led the way with an all-conference performance in third place and was followed by
Justin King (14.48 meters), who set a new personal record,
Owen Mathes (14.24 meters), and
Collin Hill (14.09 meters) in sixth, seventh and eighth place, respectively.
Senior
Worth Hinshaw nearly made all-conference in the 5,000 meter run but finished fourth with a new personal record time of 15:26.65.
Also in fourth place was Denison's distance medley relay team of
Will Cunningham,
Jason Rideout,
Leo Wisnefski and
Oliver DiCerbo, who finished with a time of 10:33.46.
Jaylin Epps was fourth in the 60 meter dash prelims with a time of 6.96 seconds and
Malik Holley was fourth in the 200 meter dash prelims with a personal record of 22.51 seconds. In addition, Epps was also fifth in the 200 meter dash behind Holley, running a time of 22.87 seconds, while
Pierce Patterson was fifth in the 400 meter dash prelims with a personal record of 50.98 seconds.
