Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 10, 2024) – The No. 9 nationally-ranked Denison University men's tennis team put up a late fight against the 2022 NCAA Division III National Champion and currently No. 10-ranked University of Chicago, but in the end, the Big Red lost to the Maroons for the second year in a row at the Indianapolis Racquet Club, this time falling by a score of 5-4.
Notable Results:
Doubles
- Chicago's Derek Hsieh and Robert Zhang defeated Denison's Ethan Green and Kael Shah 8-4 at No. 1 doubles while Arjun Asokumar and Jack Wong defeated Colin Gramley and Zachary Portnoy by a score of 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
- In the No. 2 spot, Andy Mackler and Jacob Patterson got Denison on the board with an 8-6 victory over Kane Kelley and Pat Otero. Mackler has now earned the win at No. 2 doubles against Chicago during each of the last two seasons after winning 8-5 with Portnoy a year ago.
Singles
- Patterson fell 6-1, 6-2 to Hsieh at No. 3 singles as Chicago took a 3-1 lead.
- Anthony Payiavlas was unable to finish his match against Otero at No. 5 singles as he fell 6-2, 0-1, retired, bringing the Maroons to within one win of clinching the match.
- Portnoy defeated John Walentowicz 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to make it 4-2, but the winning-point for Chicago came from a 7-5, 6-2 victory from Emil Grantcharov over Green at No. 1 singles.
- Denison made it close at the end as Shah pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over Asokumar at No. 2 singles and Mackler came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1) over Kelley in a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 6 singles.
Records:
- No. 9 Denison dropped to 1-2 while No. 10 Chicago showed the heart of a champion and improved to 3-0.
