SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Denison University Track & Field teams opened their 2024-25 indoor season with a strong showing at the Wittenberg Tiger Opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Red kicked off their campaign with three first-place finishes, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting season. Competing against several programs across the region, including Division II Cedarville University and Division I Wright State University, Denison faced a challenging field. Despite the stiff competition, the Big Red delivered standout performances and established a solid foundation for the months ahead.
NOTABLE HIGHLIGHTS:
- Chris Slater dominated the Men's Shot Put, earning first place with a throw of 15.23 meters (49'11.5"), while teammate Owen Mathes secured fourth with a mark of 13.89 meters (45'7").
- Mariel Drost delivered a stellar performance in the Women's Weight Throw, claiming first place with an impressive throw of 14.17 meters (46'6").
- Malik Holley raced to victory in the Men's 300-Meter Dash, clocking a winning time of 35.51, with teammate Caleb Zell-Ratner finishing fourth in 36.88.
- In the Men's Weight Throw, Chris Slater took second place with a throw of 18.83 meters (61'9.5"), while Owen Mathes finished ninth with a mark of 13.43 meters (44'0.75"). Slater's mark establishes a new school record in the event.
- Mira Renaldi shined in the Women's 60-Meter Hurdles, securing second place with a time of 9.28, and teammate Sydney Brown finished fourth in 9.59.
- Ari Skolnik placed fourth in the Men's 60-Meter Hurdles, clocking in at 8.35.
- Seamus McCann tied for third in the Men's Pole Vault, clearing 4.25 meters (13'11"), while Jason Spino tied for fourth with a clearance of 3.95 meters (12'11"). Joe Teates added a sixth-place finish with a vault of 3.65 meters (11'11").
- In the Women's Pole Vault, Catelyn Gagnier tied for fifth, clearing 3.05 meters (10'0").
- Simon Glass delivered a strong performance in the Men's 800-Meter Run, finishing fourth overall with a time of 1:57.77.
- Julia Schena placed third in the Women's Triple Jump with a mark of 10.37 meters (34'0"), while Eno Kissi added a ninth-place finish with a jump of 9.12 meters (29'11").
- In the Women's Long Jump, Julia Schena also secured third place with a mark of 5.00 meters (16'5"), while Sydney Brown finished fifth with a jump of 4.93 meters (16'2.25").
- Jake Mason led the Big Red in the Men's 200-Meter Dash, finishing fifth in 22.97, while teammate Ari Skolnik secured eighth with a time of 23.10.
- Jake Mason also finished sixth in the Men's 60-Meter Dash with a time of 7.11.
- Liam Quinlan finished fifth in the Men's High Jump with a clearance of 1.85 meters (6'0").
- Eric Ott earned a fourth-place finish in the Men's Triple Jump with a jump of 12.28 meters (40'3").
- Sydney Flores finished sixth in the Women's Shot Put with a throw of 10.86 meters (35'7").
- The Men's 4x400 Relay team of Holley, Glass, Quinlan, and McCann delivered a solid effort, finishing seventh overall with a time of 3:30.14.
