NORMAL, Ill. (September 17, 2023) – One day after shooting the second-lowest 18-hole team score in program history (294), the No. 17 Denison University women's golf team could not get it going in round two and fell back one spot to finish the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic in fourth place out of 19 teams.
Denison (294-316; 610) shot plus-28 during round two, tied for only the ninth-lowest score in the round. Even still, Denison's 36-hole score was good for the third-lowest in program history, trailing only the scores of 593 (Sept. 7-8, 2019) and 607 (Sept. 17-18, 2021), the latter of which came at the IWU Fall Classic two years ago.
No. 2 nationally-ranked WashU (288-296; 584) held off tournament host and No. 14-ranked Illinois Wesleyan (290-297; 587) by three strokes to win the team championship while Rose-Hulman (305-295; 600) shot the lowest second-round score of the tournament (+7) to jump the Big Red for third place.
Natalia Fanucchi (72-77; 149) finished in a three-player tie for ninth place while
Anna Klass (74-79; 153) was in a three-player tie for 21st.
Just one stroke behind, both
Ella McRoberts (76-78; 154) and
Kate Griffin (72-82; 154) finished as part of a nine-player tie for 24th place.
Lastly
Morgan Gilmore (80-80; 160) finished in a four-player tie for 52nd while
Lindsey Byer (86-83; 169) and
Lizzy Grant (85-84; 169) finished in a three-way tie for 81st.
Next month, Denison will compete in the NCAA Preview tournament (Oct. 1-2) in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
