Andy Mackler of the Denison University men's tennis team were each named to the Academic All-District® Team, selected by College Sports Communicators.
Bulger is a mathematics major who holds a 3.63 cumulative GPA and is from Mill Valley, California. He was named the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year after earning back-to-back doubles team of the year honors over the previous two seasons. He is a three-time All-NCAC selection in both singles and doubles, including two first-team selections in both singles and doubles throughout his career. Bulger was ranked No. 11 in the ITA Central Region for singles, posted a record of 12-5 in dual matches this season (flights 1-3), and was 8-4 at No. 1 singles. In 2022, Bulger and his partner,
Tim Cianciola, went on to earn All-American status in doubles and were named the NCAC Doubles Team of the Year for the second year in a row. Bulger and Cianciola were also selected to compete in the 2022 NCAA Doubles Championship, where they became the second Big Red duo ever and the first since 1997 to advance to the quarterfinals. He finished the 2022 season ranked No. 22 in singles and No. 4 in doubles in all of NCAA Division III. This year, Bulger will be competing in the NCAA Singles Championship in Orlando, Florida. A two-time NCAC Athlete of the Week and member of Denison's Student-Athlete Advisory Council, Bulger was named to the NCAC Academic Honor Roll and was a Denison Top-50 Scholar-Athlete in both 2021 and 2022, was a 2020 ITA Scholar-Athlete, and was a 2021-22 Denison Chi Alpha Sigma inductee. Although not done yet, Bulger has posted career records of 59-18 in singles and 67-24 in doubles. He is top-five in program history in singles wins and is top-six in doubles wins, and also ranks second with 126 career combined wins.
Harms is an economics and global commerce double major with a 3.87 GPA. He is from Jever, Germany, was named second-team all-conference for singles in 2022, and is now a two-two all-conference selection in doubles after teaming up with Bulger this year to go 9-4 at No. 1 doubles this season and earn second-team all-conference honors. Bulger and Harms were ranked No. 5 in the ITA Central Region for doubles. In singles this year, Harms was 7-4 in dual matches and was 4-0 at No. 1 singles. In just three seasons at Denison, Harms ranks No. 23 in program history in career singles wins (44-20). A two-time NCAC Athlete of the Week, Harms was an ITA Scholar-Athlete in both 2021 and 2022, was a 2021-22 Denison Chi Alpha Sigma inductee, and is now a two-time Denison Top-50 Scholar Athlete. He has made the Dean's list in every semester he has been at Denison, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in the Spring of 2023, was a global commerce fellow in the Fall of 2022, and has been a member of the Mortal Board since the Spring of 2022. He is a member of Denison's Student Athlete Advisory Council (DSAAC) and Diversity and Inclusion Group (DIG).
Mackler is a Health, exercise, and sport studies (HESS) and global heath double major (3.70 GPA) from Lake Mary, Florida. Mackler was named second-team all-conference for singles this season after earning honorable mention accolades last season. Mackler was 14-2 overall in dual matches (flights 3-6) this season in singles. He is a two-time NCAC Athlete of the week and is now two-time All-NCAC selection in both singles and doubles after being named third-team all-conference for doubles alongside fellow-junior
Zachary Portnoy this season. Mackler and Portnoy were 14-3 together in dual matches and were 2-0 at No. 1 doubles and 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. A three-time member of the Dean's List, Mackler was an ITA Scholar-Athlete and a member of the NCAC Academic Honor Roll in 2021-22, and was a 2022-23 Denison Chi Alpha Sigma inductee. Mackler created and co-hosted the DeStress Tennis Fest, which is designed as a mental health event open to the entire Denison community (students, faculty, staff, and families). He also works with Big Brothers Big Sisters through his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, and works with special Olympics through Denison's Student Athlete Advisory Council (DSAAC). He is a fellow for both the global health and HESS departments, has been a teacher's assistant for the Applied Anatomy course in the HESS department, and currently works in the Office of Admissions as a docent. He is a member of DSAAC and the Student Alumni Council (SAC). Mackler also spent the summer of 2022 abroad in Kenya on a public health internship, we he began learning Swahili.
The 2023 Academic All-District® Men's Tennis Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced May 31. Starting with the 2022-23 academic year, all eligible nominees submitted by member schools earn Academic All-District status. Nominees were voted to the Academic All-District Team in previous years and those winners advanced to the Academic All-America ballot.
