LAKE NONA, Fla. (May 18, 2023) – Senior
Jack Bulger of the Denison University men's tennis team competed in the first round at the 2023 NCAA Division III Singles Championship on Thursday at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Florida, falling 6-0, 6-3 to Matthew Kandel of Williams College.
Bulger, the No. 11-ranked singles player in the ITA Central Region, was defeated by Kandel, the No. 5-ranked player in the Northeast Region.
Bulger was named the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a senior after earning back-to-back doubles team of the year honors over the previous two seasons. He was named an All-American in doubles in 2022 and is a three-time All-NCAC selection in both singles and doubles, including two first-team all-conference selections in both singles and doubles. Bulger posted a singles record of 20-7 overall this season and was 12-5 in dual matches, 4-0 in conference matches at 8-4 at No. 1 singles.
This was Bulger's second appearances at the NCAA Individual Championships after he and his doubles partner,
Tim Cianciola, were selected to compete in the 2022 NCAA Doubles Championship, where they became the second Big Red duo ever and the first since 1997 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Bulger finishes his Big Red career ranked in top-five in singles wins (59) and top-six in doubles win (67), while his 126 combined wins rank as the second most in program history.
