Men collect eight wins at Big Red Invitational

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 28, 2023) – Denison University men's track and field posted eight individual victories and 11 other top-three finishes on Friday as it hosted the 2023 Big Red Invitational at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio, during what was also Senior Day for the Big Red.

Denison earned five wins on the track and three in the field events.

Winning their respective sprints were Jaylin Epps in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.07 seconds and Malik Holley in the 400 meter dash with a personal record of 49.89 seconds.

Winning in the distance events were Oliver DiCerbo with a personal record time of 4:05.91 in the 1,500 meter run and Noah Cyr in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:49.02.

In the 400 meter hurdles, Isaiah Kessler picked up the win with a personal record time of 58.07 seconds.

In the jumps, it was Tyler Miller who won the high jump with a personal record of 1.95 meters while Jack Blais won the long jump at 6.56 meters.

Lastly, in the discus, it was Gabe Springer earning the win with a long toss of 48.70 meters.

Denison added second-place finishes by Owen Mathes in the shot put (personal record 14.39 meters), Kessler in the pole vault (4.25 meters) and Angelo Ricci in the long jump (6.55 meters) in the field events while on the track, Tomas Brockett-Delgado was second in the 1,500 meter run (personal record 4:06.17), Declan Toomey was second in the 800 meter run (personal record 1:58.95) and Nico Martinelli was second in the 3,000 meter run (9:10.50).

SENIOR DAY (Times/Marks entering Friday):
  • Eric Adinkra: He is a sprinter who specializes in the 60 meter, 100 meter and 200 meter dashes is also a member of the Big Red football team, is a member of Denison Diversity & Inclusion Group, the Black Student Union, and is a peer advisor on campus.
  • Collin Hill: During the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships this year, Collin set a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 15.07 meters, which was good enough for first place in the event and ranks No. 5 in program history. Hill is also a member of the Big Red football team.
  • Angelo Ricci: He is a three-time All-NCAC performer who placed first in the triple jump and second in the long jump at the 2021 NCAC Outdoor Championships. This year during the Centre Invite, Ricci set a new personal best in the long jump with a leap of 6.78 meters, which was good for third place and ranks No. 7 in program history. He is a two-time member of the NCAC Academic Honor-Roll, was a 2021 USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete and a 2021-22 Chi Alpha Sigma inductee, and has been named the NCAC Field Athlete of the Week twice in his career.
  • Hilton Sanchez: His personal best of 6.30 meters in the long jump came at this year's Wittenberg Invitational. On campus, he is a member of the Denison's Diversity and Inclusion Group and DU Votes.
  • Gabe Springer: He is the Denison school record holder in the discus with a throw of 50.34 meters at the Mount Union Last Chance meet in 2022 to qualify for nationals. Springer has won the discus at both the 2022 and 2023 All-Ohio Outdoor Championships, and he finished 20th in the discus at the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a throw of 39.38 meters. His personal record of 14.46 meters in the weight throw ranks No. 3 in program history for indoor track & field, and his personal best of 45.36 meters in the hammer also ranks No. 3 for outdoor track & field. He was named to the All-Great Lakes Region team for discus in 2022 and was a 2022 USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete and a 2022-23 Denison Chi Alpha Sigma inductee.
  • Shin Yano: He is a sprinter who specializes in the 60 meter, 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. On campus, he works as a tour guide and peer mentor.
 
NEXT UP: The Big Red will return to action on Saturday, April 29, when junior Jacob Brown and freshman Justin Tharayil represent the men's track & field program at the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Outdoor Championships, hosted by Oberlin College.
