Men’s track & field competes at Jesse Owens Classic and inaugural Duane Gomez Invitational

GAMBIER, Ohio (April 22, 2023) – Denison University men's track and field competed at the 2023 Jesse Owens Classic on Friday and Saturday at Ohio State University while also placing fifth at the inaugural Duane Gomez Invitational hosted by Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon in Gambier.
 
JESSE OWENS CLASSIC:
On Friday, sophomore Andrew D'Asaro broke the school record in the javelin for the second time this season, doing so with a throw of 61.47 meters, which was good for fourth place. His previous record was 58.88 meters, set at the Wooster Dual Meet last week, which broke the original record of 57.85 meters set by Steve Gallego in 2009.

Jack Blais added a top-10 finish in the long jump on Friday with a personal record leap of 6.79 meters, which was good for ninth place, while Angelo Ricci was 19th in the long jump at 6.47 meters.

Then on Saturday, Ari Skolnik was 14th in the prelims of the 110 meter hurdles with a new personal record of 14.88 seconds while Jaylin Epps tied for 21st with a time of 10.94 seconds in the 100 meter dash prelims.

In addition, Gabe Springer was 16th with a throw of 47.90 meters in the discus.

  • Jaylin Epps – tied for 21st place in the 100 meter dash prelims – 10.94 seconds
  • Malik Holley – 26th place in the 200 meter dash – 22.58 seconds
  • Daniel DeSantis – 31st place in the 110 meter dash prelims – 11.20 seconds
  • Declan Toomey – 51st place in the 1,500 meter run – 4:02.90
 
DUANE GOMEZ INVITATIONAL:
Denison's two wins came from Tyler Miller with a leap of 1.88 meters in the high jump and Nathan Hydukovich with a time of 50.37 seconds in the 400 meter dash. Miller also added a third-place finish in the long jump at 6.21 meters.

Justin Tharayil was third in the high jump behind Miller at 1.78 meters while Liam Quinlan was fourth, also at 1.78 meters. Also behind Miller in the long jump was Hilton Sanchez in fourth place at 6.17 meters.

Collin Hill was second in the shot put with a throw of 14.63 meters while Owen Mathes was third at 13.97 meters and Chris Slater was sixth at 12.85 meters. Hill was also sixth in the discus at 39.08 meters while Slater was eighth at 37.66 meters.

Also in the throws, Slater was second in the hammer at 42.32 meters while Mathes was third at 40.04 seconds.

Isaiah Kessler was fifth in the pole vault at 4.20 meters.

On the track, Jairus Branch was fifth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.60 seconds while Eric Adinkra was ninth at 12.10 seconds and Quinlan was sixth in the 200 meter dash at 24.10 seconds.

NEXT UP: Denison will return to action next Friday, April 28, when they host the 2023 Big Red Invitational at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville. The throwing events are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by the remaining field events at 2 p.m. and then the track events at 5 p.m. It will also be Senior Day for the Big Red. The senior recognition ceremony will take place at the stadium at the completion of the meet - approximately 8 p.m.
