LAKE NONA, Fla. (March 13, 2023) – Sporting a newly-minted nationally-ranking of No. 10 in the ITA DIII Coaches Poll, the Denison University men's tennis team started off its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 5-1 win over North Central College on Monday at the USTA National Campus.
Notable Results:
Singles
- The match started with singles due to rain as the two teams agreed to play to a decision instead of a full match.
- Through the course of multiple rain delays, the Big Red earned the win before any doubles matches were needed to be played.
- Andreas Chapides earned the first point of the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
- Ethan Green won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Andy Mackler won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Marc-Lennart Harms won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to give Denison a 4-0 lead.
- Jack Bulger fell in a third-set super tiebreaker with a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) decision at No. 1 singles
- Then in the final singles match at the No. 4 spot, the Big Red were able to clinch the win as Zachary Portnoy was victorious by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Records:
- It was the first matchup between Denison (7-1 overall) and North Central (8-4).
Cancelation:
- Denison's second match scheduled for Monday against No. 34-ranked Occidental College was canceled due to rain.
Next Up: On day two of its Spring Break trip on Tuesday, March 14, Denison will face the challenge of squaring off against three opponents in one day. It will begin with Carthage College at 8:30 a.m., followed by Skidmore College at 12 p.m. and then NCAA Division I Niagara University at 6 p.m.
