Brown wins NCAC Heptathlon with another school record performance

GRANVILLE, Ohio (February 19, 2023) – Junior Jacob Brown closed out the final day of the heptathlon with a new school record as he placed first overall at the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Championship held inside the Mitchell Fieldhouse at Denison University.

Finishing the weekend with a new school record of 4,669 points, Brown landed just 28 points ahead of the College of Wooster's Davis Patterson (4,641 points) in second place while Wabash College's Jake Oostman (4,413 points) finished in third place. Brown's performance ranks 15th in all of NCAA Division III for the heptathlon this year.

After securing 2,661 points through the first four events on Saturday to sit in second place, Brown started out the day on Sunday with a second-place finish and a time of 9.01 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles while Giovonni Zappala (Wabash) was first at 8.94 seconds and Oostman was third at 9.13 seconds. That helped Brown pull to within 74 points of Oostman (3,479-3,405) for first place overall with two events to go.

In the pole vault, Brown tied for third place with Sam Callinan (Wittenberg) with a mark of 3.84 meters (12-07.25). Patterson earned the win at 4.44 meters (14-06.75) while Daniel Jansen (DePauw) was second at 3.94 meters (12-11.00). Oostman, meanwhile, finished in sixth place at 3.24 meters (10-07.50) and dropped to third place in the overall standings while Brown moved up to first place with 3,978 points, just 63 points ahead of Patterson (3,915) in second place.

In the final event, the 1,000 meter run, Patterson (2:53.78) edged out Brown's second-place time of 2:57.33, but the 35 points gained by Patterson were not enough to overtake Brown for the NCAC championship.

In all for the weekend, Brown had five top-two finishes out of the seven events, including a win in the long jump and second-place showings in the 60 meter dash, shot put, 60 meter hurdles and the 1,000 meter run.

After setting the Denison school record in the heptathlon at both the NCAC Indoor Track & Field Combined Events Championship and the All-Ohio Indoor Track & Field Combined Events Championship as a sophomore last year, Brown's total of 4,669 points this year was 342 points better than his previous record of 4,327 points set at the conference championship a year ago.

NEXT UP: The Big Red will head to the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by DePauw University on Friday, February 24, and Saturday, February 24, in Greencastle, Indiana.
