INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 19, 2023) – The No. 12 Denison University men's tennis team matched up against the defending NCAA Division III national champions in neutral-court action on Sunday, but in the end, the Big Red fell 7-2 against the No. 1 nationally-ranked team in the country, the University of Chicago, at the Indianapolis Racquet Club.
Notable Results:
Doubles
- Earning the win in doubles for the Big Red with an 8-5 decision over Sachin Das and John Walentowicz in the No. 2 spot was Andy Mackler and Zachary Portnoy, who are now 3-0 together in doubles through five matches this season.
- Jacob Patterson and Andreas Chapides fell 8-5 to Arjun Asokumar and Biren Reddy at No. 3 doubles as the Maroons took a 2-1 lead into singles.
Singles
- In singles, Bulger fell 6,3, 6-3 to Derek Hsieh at the No. 2 spot before Chicago clinched the team win with a 7-2, 6-2 decision by Andrei Leonov over Ethan Green at No. 5 singles.
- Patterson picked up Denison's lone win in singles action as he defeated Das in a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 4 singles with a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) comeback victory. Patterson is now 3-0 in dual matches so far this season.
- At No. 6 singles, Mackler fell to Jack Wong in a third set super tiebreaker that finished 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
- Lastly, at No. 1 singles, Kael Shah fought hard but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 to Asokumar.
Records:
- No. 12 Denison dropped to 4-1 while No. 1 Chicago improved to 6-0.
Next Up: Denison will play host to both Kalamazoo College and the University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, March 4, in Granville, Ohio. The Big Red will first take on the Hornets starting at 11 a.m. before battling the Racers at 4 p.m. to finish off the day.
