Jacob Brown wins heptathlon with another school record at Oiler Opener

FINDLAY, Ohio (December 1, 2023) – Before the rest of the team opens the 2023-24 track & field season at the Tiger Opener on Saturday, Denison University senior Jacob Brown headed to the Oiler Opener hosted by Findlay University to compete in the heptathlon on Thursday and Friday, and Brown finished in first place with a new Denison school record of 4,796 points. That broke his own school record of 4,669 points sets at the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Championship held at Denison last season. It was also the fourth time in his career that Brown has broken the school record in the heptathlon.

Jacob Brown finished in second place after day one on Thursday with 2,748 points after taking third place in the 60 meter dash (7.36 seconds), the long jump (6.42 meters) and the shot put (12.13 meters), all before finishing second in the high jump at 1.88 meters.

Leading the field of 16 competitors after day one was Walsh freshman Joel Brown, who totaled 2,762 points, just 14 more than Jacob Brown, after taking second in the 60 meter dash (7.23 seconds), first in the long jump (6.58 meters), eighth in the shot put (10.59 meters) and first in the high jump (1.91 meters).

On day two on Friday, Jacob Brown was first in the 60 meter hurdles (8.79 meters), third in the pole vault (3.80 meters) and second in the 1,000 meter run (2:57.10). Joel Brown was eighth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.81 meters) and fourth in the pole vault (3.70 meters), and despite winning the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:55.13, finished second overall with 4,588 points.

In all for the weekend, Jacob Brown had three top-two finishes and was top-three in all seven events. He also set new personal records in the 60 meter dash, high jump and the 60 meter hurdles.

Also competing in the heptathlon for Denison at the Oiler Opener was sophomore Justin Tharayil, who was 16th in the 60 meter dash (7.77 seconds), ninth in the long jump (5.77 meters), sixth in the shot put (10.83 meters) and eighth in the high jump (1.73 meters) to put himself in 10th place with 2,270 total points after day one. On day two, however, Tharayil was unable to compete. Tharayil sets new personal bests in the 60 meter dash and the shot put.
