Men’s tennis opens 2022-23 season

GAMBIER, Ohio (September 19, 2022) – The Denison University men's tennis team began its 2022-23 season by competing at both the Kenyon Invitational and the UT Rockets Fall Invitational this past weekend. The Big Red sent mainly their upperclassmen and returners to Toledo while the newcomers and underclassmen got introduced to the North Coast Athletic Conference by competing at Kenyon.
 
UT Rockets Fall Invitational:
  • At Toledo on Friday, Denison took on Holy Cross College (Ind.) and won six of the eight matches in total, including five of six singles matches.
  • In singles, senior Jack Bulger gutted out a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6) win, fellow-senior Marc-Lennart Harms won 6-1, 1-1 (retired), junior Andy Mackler was victorious 6-2, 6-0, junior Milan Gonela won 6-4, 6-3 and senior Daniel Garcia came out on top 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, Garcia and junior Nadeem Jones won by a score of 6-2.
  • Then on Saturday, the Big Red opened the day by taking on the hosts, Toledo, and saw Jones come back to win 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) in three sets. Then against the defending NCAA Division III National Champions, the University of Chicago, Denison won three of the four singles matches as Bulger won 6-4, 6-3, Mackler won 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-8) in three sets, and Colin Gramley was a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) winner as well.
  • On the final day at Toledo, Denison took on NCAA Division I Niagara University and earned a 6-2, 7-5 win by Mackler and Thompson in doubles and a 6-1, 6-1 win by Garcia in singles.
  • By the end of the tournament, Bulger and Mackler were both named to the All-Tournament Team. Both Bulger and Mackler earned singles wins over Holy Cross and Chicago while Mackler also earned in a win in doubles to give him three wins on the weekend overall.
 
Kenyon Invitational:
  • Day one on Saturday saw sophomores Joseph Boyle and Archie Turner and freshmen Andreas Chapides, Jacob Patterson, Nickawn Namdar and Ethan Green each go 2-0 in singles competition.
  • Boyle defeated Sebastien Naginski of Oberlin College 6-3, 6-2 and then beat Grant Sarnowski of John Carroll University 6-1, 6-4 while Turner defeated Molner of Washington and Lee University 6-3, 6-3 and then beat Aidan Biglow of Kenyon College 6-0, 6-1.
  • Chapides bested Anmay Devraj of Case Western Reserve University 6-0, 6-1 and defeated Rohan Gold of Oberlin 7-6. Patterson took down William Wang of Carnegie Mellon University 7-5, 6-2 and came back to beat Evan Brady of Washington and Lee in three sets, 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-4). Namdar defeated Akshay Joshi of Carnegie Mellon 6-3, 6-1 and beat Mateo Moss of Washington and Lee 6-1, 6-0. Lastly, Green earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Connor Coleman of Washington & Lee and had a 6-2, 6-2 win against Yuvraj Narang from Case Western Reserve.
  • In doubles action on Saturday, Chapides and fellow freshman Anthony Payiavlas defeated Rishil Kondapaneni and Eric Zhang of Kenyon 8-7 while another freshmen duo featuring Green and Camden French bested Rohan Bhat and Matthew Plunkett of Case Western Reserve by the same score of 8-7. Additionally, Boyle and Namdar took down Evan Dean and Harshal Rukhaiyar of Kenyon 8-6.
  • During day two on Sunday, Turner defeated Joshi in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7); Chapides defeated Will Kistler of Washington and Lee 6-4, 6-2; Namdar beat Jacob Smith of Kenyon 7-6, 7-3; and Green earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Diego Maza from Case Western Reserve as all four men finished the tournament 3-0 in singles.
  • In doubles on Sunday, Namdar and fellow-freshman Charlie Kuchler defeated Sarnowski and Anthony Markello of John Carroll and Joshi and Sebastien Lhuillier of Carnegie Mellon, both by scores of 8-4.
  • Meanwhile, Patterson and junior Zach Portnoy beat Kistler and Eli Hirshberg of Washington and Lee 8-3 and took down Maza and John Kasner of Case Western Reserve 8-7.
  • Lastly, Green and French defeated Wang and Raahil Doshi of Carnegie Mellon 8-4 and bested Logan Langovsky and Kevin Wacnik of John Carroll by a score of 8-3 to finish 3-0 together over the weekend.
  • Green and Namdar were both a combined 6-0 between their 3-0 performances in singles and in doubles.
  • In all, Denison was a combined 10-3 in doubles between both days of the tournament.
