GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 29, 2022) – Denison University men's track & field hosted the 2022 Big Red Invitational on Friday at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio, tallying nine individual victories and 13 other finishes in the top-three while also celebrating its senior class of 2022.
In the shot put, Denison swept the top-three spots as Colin Hill won the event with a mark of 14.40 meters while
Owen Mathes (13.00 meters) was second and
Chris Slater (12.83 meters) was third.
Slater also won the hammer with a throw of 51.93 meters, and was second in the discus with a toss of 38.44 meters.
In the javelin,
Andrew D'Asaro picked up the win with a launch of 54.96 meters, giving the Big Red a win in three of the four throwing events overall.
Also in the field events,
Grant Plasch finished second in the pole vault, jumping a maximum height of 3.60 meters while
Tyler Miller finished second in the high jump with a leap of 1.86 meters.
Denison took each of the third-, fourth- and fifth-place finishes in the long jump as
Jack Blais (6.62 meters),
Shuo Yuan Chen (6.54 meters) and Miller (6.46 meters) finished in order.
In the first individual race on the track,
Zackary Johnston (4:03.83) got things going with a win while
Worth Hinshaw (4:08.35) and
Will Cunningham (4:09.74) finished in third and fourth place, respectively, to give Denison three of the top-four finishers.
Charlie Webb was dominant in the hurdles, winning the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.30 seconds and the 400 meter hurdles at 55.84 seconds.
In the sprinting events, Denison had three of the top-five finishers in the 100 meter dash as
Seven Lindsey (11.30 seconds) was third,
Malik Holley (11.39 seconds) was fourth and
Ethan Scott (11.49 seconds) was fifth. Then in the 200 meter dash, Holley came back to win it with a time of 22.56 seconds while Lindsey was just behind in second place at 22.66 seconds. Plasch would finish sixth in the 200 at 23.48 seconds and
Daniel DeSantis was seventh at 23.54 seconds, giving the Big Red four of the top-seven times in the event.
Back in the distance events,
Calvin Bailey won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.32 while
Nathan Bertman (8:53.38) and
Nico Martinelli (9:15.04) finished in second and fourth place, respectively, in the 3,000 meter run.

SENIOR DAY:
- Shuo Yuan Chen: After jumping a new personal record of 6.27 meters in the long jump last weekend at the Kenyon Spring Invitational, he surpassed that mark with a leap of 6.54 meters on Friday.
- Porter Fitzgerald: As a senior, he threw a new personal record of 12.26 meters in the weight throw at the NCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, and now he also tossed a new record of 39.32 meters in the hammer on Friday.
- Keanan Ginell: He was named 2022 NCAC Indoor Track & Field Distance Athlete of the Year after winning conference championships in both the 3,000 and the 5,000 meter run. He is a three-time NCAC Indoor Track & field all-conference athlete, including twice in the 5,000, and has also earned all-conference in the 5,000 in outdoor track & field. So far as a senior, he set new personal records of 4:17.96 in the mile at the Wittenberg Invite, 8:36.67 in the 3,000 meter run and 14:53.15 in the 5,000 at the NCAC Indoor Track & Feld Championships, and 32:12.22 in the 10,000 meter run at the Tiffin Track Carnival. He is also a member of the Big Red men's cross country team, where he was named as the 2021 NCAC Runner of the Year, was a member of the 2021 All-Great Lakes Region Team, and became the first Denison men's cross country runner to compete at nationals since 2011.
- Lewis Hurd: At the 2021 NCAC Outdoor Championships, a ran a 200 meter dash personal record of 24.46 seconds, and then this season at the Bob Shannon Invitational, he ran a new personal record in the 60 meter dash of 7.54 seconds. He is also a member of the Big Red Football team.
- Zackary Johnston: He is a 2022 All-Conference and All-Ohio performer in the Distance Medley Relay for indoor track & field. In addition to running a new personal record of 4:03.83 to win the 1,500 meter run on Friday, other personal records he has run so far this season include 4:27.83 in the mile at the NCAC Indoor Championships, 1:59.79 in the 800 meter run at the Wooster Dual Meet a few weeks ago, and 9:54.66 in the 3,0000 meter steeplechase at the All-Ohio Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He is also a member of the Big Red cross country team.
- Seven Lindsey: He was the 2021 NCAC Outdoor Championship Sprinter/Hurdles Athlete of the Year after winning conference championships and setting new personal records in both the 100 and the 200 meter dashes, and was a member of the 2021 All-Great Lakes Region team. He holds the Denison indoor 200 meter dash school record with a time of 22.43 seconds. He is also a member of the Big Red Football team.
