DELAWARE, Ohio (April 16, 2022) – The Denison University men's track & field team collected 111.50 points en route to a first-place finish at the 2022 All-Ohio Championship meet on Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University. It was the first ever Outdoor All-Ohio Track & Field Championship for the Denison men's team, which just beat out Case Western Reserve in second place with 111 points.
Denison picked up event championships from junior
Gabe Springer in the discus (44.92 meters) and freshman
Malik Holley in the 400 meter dash (50.11 seconds) while also earning five other All-Ohio nods.
A pair of freshmen,
Andrew D'Asaro and
Tyler Miller, were second in the javelin (48.29 meters) and in the high jump (1.88 meters), respectively, while two juniors,
Charlie Webb and
Angelo Ricci, also earned All-Ohio as Webb was second in the 400 meter hurdles (55.38 seconds) and Ricci was third in the triple jump (12.96 meters).
Denison's final All-Ohio recognition of the meet came in the 20th and final event, the 4x400 meter relay, which allowed the Big Red to win the meet after Holley,
Jack Blais,
Calvin Bailey and Webb worked together to finish third with a time of 3:25.89.
The Big Red took the lead in the team standings after the 10th event when Holley won the 400 meter dash by .10 seconds in front of Nick Scherson from Wooster, giving Denison a narrow 56-55 lead over Case at the time.
After dropping to a tie for third place after 14 events, Webb's second-place finish in the 400 hurdles got Denison back to second place behind Case (90-83.50) after 16 events.
Then after finishes of fifth and sixth place by Holley (22.44 seconds) and
Seven Lindsey (22.50 seconds), respectively, in the 200 meter dash, Denison took back over first place on only .50 points (90.50-90) over the Spartans.
The Big Red fell back to second place after the 5,000 meter run before walking it off by a half a point after the 4x400.
Tiffin Track Carnival: In addition to the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships on Saturday, Denison also sent two athletes to compete at the Tiffin University Track Carnival, held at H's Track at Heidelberg University on Friday, April 15.
Charlie Webb competed in both the 110 and 400 meter hurdles for the Big Red and finished fifth out of 18 in the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.92 seconds while taking 10th out of 22 in the 110 hurdles at 15.17 seconds. Meanwhile, in the 10,000 meter run ran late on Friday night,
Keanan Ginell finished eighth out of 18 runners with a time of 32:12.22.
